Creative Thinking Framework for Teams

The Leadership Channel Consulting • April 26, 2024

The 1-3-1 Method personifies a solution-oriented mindset essential for leaders in organizations. Whether you're a Founder, CEO, or an Executive, encouraging middle management leaders and teams to adopt the 1-3-1 method can revolutionize problem-solving dynamics within your team and across your organization.

This concept was introduced in a 1942 book by economist Joseph Schumpeter titled, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. By way of logic, Schumpeter strongly argued that evolving institutions, entrepreneurs, and technological changes were the heart of economic growth. This is why the 1-3-1 Method, a concept reintroduced by Dan Martell and used by top Business Leaders, can make all the difference. In the sphere of management, delegating tasks effectively and making informed decisions are constant challenges. However, these challenges can become persistent obstacles if managers find themselves trapped in a cycle of solving problems for their team members, hindering the team's growth potential. The concept of the 1-3-1 Method, reintroduced by Dan Martell and utilized by top Business Leaders, addresses this issue.

The '1': A Clearly Communicated Challenge.

At the core of the 1-3-1 Method lies the identification of a single, clearly articulated challenge. When a team member presents an issue, encourage them to precisely pinpoint and express the problem. This seemingly simple step is often transformative, as a well-defined problem is halfway to being solved. It compels individuals to delve deep into the specifics, eliminating vague concerns or general dissatisfaction.

The '3': Three Viable Solutions.

After identifying the problem, the next step is for the team member to explore and propose three potential solutions. This not only improves the burden on managers or CEOs but also allows team members to exercise their analytical skills. Through research and brainstorming, they search into the nuances of the problem, potentially uncovering overlooked aspects.

The '1': Making A Recommendation

The final phase entails the team member presenting a recommendation from the three solutions proposed. This nurtures a sense of ownership and initiative, demonstrating that the team member has not only comprehended the issue but has also formulated a preferred course of action.

As Richard Branson once remarked, "Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to." The 1-3-1 approach embodies this philosophy by empowering team members, fostering independence, and nurturing their investment in their work. While not a complex strategy, it is highly effective in simplifying leadership and reclaiming valuable time. Indeed, it can be regarded as a "leadership hack" for creating and maintaining a solution-oriented mindset throughout the organization. Start a systematic approach around the 1-3-1 method, provide training to your teams, hold them accountable, and lead by example. This approach serves as a cost-effective coaching tool, enhancing team members' ability to think and act with agility, creativity, and simplicity.
